ABOUT DAVID

 

David R. Payne, Jr.On August 30th, 1982 on the beautiful island of St. Thomas, United states Virgin Islands, there was a special glow in the sun. A bouncing baby boy was born. Proud parents, Blanche Frazer and David Payne, Sr. welcomed David Payne, Jr. into the world.


David was a delight to all who came into his life. He was diagnosed with asthma, referred to several professionals including, a speech pathologist who said that he would not be able to pronounce words as efficiently as other kids would. David excelled in everything he put his hands and mind to do. He attended the Seventh Day Adventist and Christ Church Methodist with his parents, where he was a very active member of both places of worship. He was very spiritual. He read the bible regularly and shared this knowledge with all those he encountered, especially children. He attended Carol's Daycare in Frenchtown, where he was loved by everyone he came in contact with.


In the summer of 1984, David moved to Philadelphia to stay with his father who had relocated for educational reasons. David and his sister Rochelle shared a special bond. They would spend summers & winters alternating between Philadelphia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.


David went to Lockhart Elementary school in St. Thomas and Beeber Middle School in Philadelphia. He graduated from the William Penn High School with honors where, he was loved by all his peers. After his graduation from high school David attended Penn State and Temple Universities. David later returned to St. Thomas where he attended the University of the Virgin Islands and received an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education which he received with honors. David always stressed his love for children. He served the community as an instructional leader, teacher, mentor, and a pharmacy technician in the Doctor's Choice and Healthy Choice pharmacies respectively. He was currently attending UVI, pursuing a Masters degree in Education.


David was well known and well loved by all. He was a devoted father to his three sons and step-daughter, and a genuine friend to many in the community. David loved to travel. He also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, chanting and singing. He was a jokester and loved a good laugh.


From a very young age David was determined to succeed and loved the feeling of accomplishment. He was known as the Mathematical Genius. He received honors in all his educational pursuits, from elementary through college and was the recipient of many academic scholarships and awards. A few short weeks before his death, David began his career as an elementary school teacher at Ulla F. Muller Elementary School in St. Thomas.


David is survived by mother, Blanche Frazer; father, David R. Payne Sr.; wife, Janice Mayers; grandmother, Fredericka Payne; grandfather, Frederick Payne; sons, David R. Payne III, Jahvia and Jahzion Payne; daughter, J'Nee Powell, adopted; brothers, Jamal Payne and Jelani Payne; sisters, Olufemi Francis and Rochelle Payne; aunts, Stephanie Payne, Alison Charles, Rehenia Joshua; uncles, Rouse Payne, Ivan Mohammed and attorney Victor O. Frazer; and many other families, including Blyden, Francis, Todman, Cameron, Henley, Estrada, Clyne and Boynes.




On the evening of September 7, 2012 at approximately 10:30pm, David Payne, Jr. was shot and killed in front of his residence by unknown assailants. David will be truly missed, but has earned his place in Heaven with God. Even though he is physically gone, his spirit will live forever.
